Living in the 21 st Century is become an increasingly toxic affair. Each and every day the average person is exposed to airborne pollution, contaminated tap water and additive-laden foods, this is before we include the toxins in our household products, cosmetics and toiletries. This exposure is significantly contributing to an increase in many health problems and as a result we have become more conscious of the need to avoid or reduce our exposure to these toxins. The current trend towards detox regimes and detox diets is a step in the right direction, but what does detoxification actually mean?
Detoxification: “Detoxification involves the cleansing of the body by the removal of toxic matter.”
This can be achieved by
Eating ‘clean’ foods,
Removing toxic matter from the body.
This often involves dietary support and adjunctive therapies.
Why Detoxify? The main benefit to detoxifying your body is to prevent the onset of ill health, but there are other reasons.
These include:
Weight Loss
Weight loss is the most immediate benefit. As the body throws off toxic waste it moves towards a state of balance, ridding itself of excess fluid, fat and other unnecessary accumulated matter.
Slows the Aging Process
The ageing process is also slowed by detoxification. The regeneration of new and healthy tissue can create a more youthful appearance.
Improved Mental and Physical Health
Greater mental clarity and physical vitality will also be experienced. Long-term detoxification can also result in the reversal of many adverse health conditions.
How does detoxification work?
Detoxification works by removing any matter that is preventing the body from being healthy. The detoxification process quite literally pushes out any of the unneeded waste that is clogging up the systems of the body, in particular, the digestive system. In the absence of waste matter, the body is able to function at its optimum allowing it to achieve health and vitality.
It is important to remember that detoxification is an ongoing daily aspect of normal bodily function and is not a new concept of healthcare or weight control. The human body is equipped with organs of elimination and spends much of its time processing the toxic waste that is continually accumulating in the human body. In an ideal world, there would be no need for detoxification programmes as the body is perfectly equipped to deal with waste. However, due to increased exposure to toxins, the average human body is no longer able to cope with the level of waste to which it is now exposed. Detoxification programmes have therefore become an unfortunate, yet highly recommended and beneficial aspect of modern living.
Who shouldn’t follow a detox?
Although most people would benefit from following a detoxification programme, there are some who should avoid this kind of regime. Pregnant or breastfeeding woman should never undertake any form of detoxification because toxic matter that circulates through the bloodstream has potential to cause harm to their unborn/nursing child.
