How to use and choose the right eye shadow for you.
Eye shadow is perhaps the most beloved cosmetic of creative makeup artists it is used to shade and highlight your eyes. Eyes are the most important focal point of the face, so it is important to ensure that your eye makeup techniques and choice of colours for your eyeshadow should suit the shape and colour of your eyes.

The most important beauty trick in regard to choosing the perfect eyeshadow colour for you is that the light colours highlight the spots while dark colours tame them down.

Step 1 Before you apply your eyeshadow, apply a neutral concealer or foundation that matches your skin tone on the eyelid and then sweep the lightest shade over the entire area from the lash line to the brow line to create the smudge resistant base.
Step 2 Apply the medium shade on the lower lid and blend it into your base shade.
Step 3 If you are using a third colour, it can be added along the lash line and outer corner of the eyes or along the eye socket as an accent to create the depth in eyes.

Tips for making the most of your eyeshadow:
  • Blonde haired people with blue eyes should opt for browns and taupes while those with green eyes can go for soft mauves and lilacs.
  • Blue eyeshadow looks best if you either have fair skin, black or platinum hair and brown or grey eyes or very dark skin.
  • Don't match your shadow with your eyes or your clothes so that attention remains with your eyes and not your makeup! Instead look for colours that will enhance your natural eye colour.
  • If you are short-sighted, your glasses will magnify your eyes, so opt for colours in more muted shades.
  • If you are far-sighted, your glasses will make your eyes appear smaller, so choose brighter colours and apply several coats of mascara to really make your eyes sparkle.
  • If you have close set eyes, go for a light colour on the inner corners and a darker shade on the outer edges of your eyes.
  • If you have wide set eyes use a darker shade of eyeshadow on the inner corners of your eyes and a darker shade on the outer edges.
  • If you want to lift droopy eyes, shade the outer corners of the eyes, tapering your eyeshadow upwards and outwards.
  • To elongate round eyes only apply your eyeshadow on the mid and outer eyelid and don’t apply eyeliner to your lower lid.
  • For day makeup, you can just use a base colour and mascara.
  • Lighter shadows give the appearance of larger eyes while darker shades can make them look smaller.
  • Neutral shades like browns and beiges look natural while brighter shades like blue and green give a more dramatic look.
  • On mature skin and puffy eyelids, avoid using iridescent, frosted, or light colours, choosing to opt for softer matte colours.
  • To add definition to your eyelids, apply a medium-toned shade across the lid and brow bone and dust the under brow area with a light highlighter shade. Use a very fine pencil liner of natural colour to line the upper and lower lash lines.
  • For more dramatic eyes, add shimmer to highlight your eyes.
  • To lift up tired eyes extend the colour from the outer corner of the lid upwards to give them a feline shape. A light highlighter on the brow bone without the eyeliner brightens up the eyes. Concentrate mascara on the inner corner of the eye.
